Saturday 28th January
U/14 Girls Cup
Rathkeale 2-1 Askeaton AFC
Siofra Gallagher
We led 1-0 with a great goal from Siofra Gallagher in the second half until Rathkeale equalised 3 minutes into overtime.
Full time 1-1.
We had to play the full 20 minutes of extra time with only 10 players due to injuries to 2 of our girls in normal time. Rathkeale scored in the 1st period of extra time and tried as hard as we could we just couldn’t get the vital equalising score. But well done to all of our girls who played with a never say die attitude to the very end.
U/14 Boys Div 2
Dromore B 1-1 Askeaton AFC
Sam Costello
A very good performance by all on Saturday, we went 1 nil down after 6 minutes. We were awarded a free in the 25th minute where Sam levelled things up from 30 yards.
It was brilliant to see that team spirit right through on every inch of the pitch. The first point of the season for our boys and girls and fully deserved.
Youths Division 3
Shountrade AFC 2-1 Askeaton AFC
Arron McCarthy
Our Youths lost out 2-1 to Shountrade on Saturday. Started off a bit slow in the first half and gave away a soft goal. Our keeper Cathal Guerin brought up from the u/16 team pulled off a fantastic save from a penalty to keep it 1 nil. The boys created a lot of chances but couldn’t find the net before half time.
We started off strong in the second half and got a penalty, in which their keeper pulled off a save similar to Cathals. Later in the half Arron scored a header to make it 1-1. We kept pushing for the winner but unfortunately a late goal for Shountrade saw them claim the 3 points. A very good game between two even sides.
Team: Cathal Guerin, Luke Kelly, Aaron Mulcahy, Arron McCarthy, Aidan Fogarty, Aron Kelly, Thomas McCarthy, Evan Costello, Tyrique Harte, Sam Harty, Cathal Moran, Daniel Ruane, Christopher Sheehy, Conor Purcell, Stephen Maune.
Sunday 29th January
Weekly Observer Division 1
Askeaton AFC 2-0 Dromore Utd (1-0 HT)
Cian Smith
Stephen Smith
Sunday morning saw our junior team face a strong Dromore side. The lads were under pressure in the early stages of the first half but some great saves from man of the match Jeff denied Dromore taking the lead. After a long ball over the top, Cian Smith was through on goal and rounded the keeper and slotted it home. Just before half time, Dromore were reduced to 10 men. The second half was an end to end half with both sides having good chances. Our second goal came from the penalty spot from Stephen Smith after his brother Cian was taken out inside the box. The lads stayed strong and saw out the win.
Team: Jeff Duggan, Cormac O’ Keeffe, Alan McGrath, Colum Sweeney, Caolan Rushe, Stephen Smith, Sam Duggan, Ray Kelly, Matt Moane, Cian Smith, Niall Barry, Jamie Harty and Kieran Walsh.
